A timely choice for this month, Julia Alvarez’s A Wedding in Haiti shares the story of the unique relationship the author and her husband have with a Haitian refugee, a young man, whom they first met in the Dominican Republic. Taking place just recently before the devastating earthquake of 2010, it takes the reader on a journey through illegal border crossings, post-earthquake Haiti, the blessings of investing ourselves in others, and of course: a wedding. You can read more at the author’s website and at NPR.
*Attention Summer Reading Program participants: reading A Wedding in Haiti and attending the Riverbend Book Club Discussion Group on Tuesday, June 23 at 6pm will entitle your reading slip for this book to count as TWO entries.
